ROCHESTER, NY -- The #6 RIT (2-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC West) women's hockey team began ECAC West play in fine fashion, defeating Neumann College (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC West), 6-1 on Friday night. The Tigers went 3-for-7 on the power play and tallied a short-handed goal en route to their second win of the season.
After a scoreless first period the Tigers exploded for three goals in the second. All three goals were special teams goals, two power play and one short-handed.
#Amanda Klassen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Warner Warriors)# (Winnipeg, MB) gave RIT a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 3:30 of the second.
#Keltie Jones (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Jr. Barracudas)# (Burlington, ON) had the assist on the play.
Klassen struck again at 5:17 of the second on a short-handed breakaway. The Tigers were down two, and
#Katie Stack (Batavia, NY/Rochester Edge)# (Batavia, NY) poked the puck free at center ice. She and Klassen broke in two-on-one. Stack flicked a pass over to Klassen who tipped the puck home for her second tally of the night.
Keltie Jones (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Jr. Barracudas) rounded out the scoring in the second with another power-play goal at 15:19 of the period. Klassen picked up the only assist.
Neumann made it a 3-1 game early in the third when they converted on a two-man power play opportunity. Nicki Blazenko got the goal on an assist from Nicole Alexopolo.
The Tigers exploded for three unanswered goals, putting the game away.
#Sarah Dagg (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks)# (St. George, ON) picked off a pass along the boards, skated around two Neumann defenders and scored on a nice move, making it 4-1 RIT.
Keltie Jones (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Jr. Barracudas) scored her second goal of the night at 4:38 of the third on assists from
Alli Hills (Honeoye Falls, NY) and
Sarah Dagg (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks). It was the Tigers third power play goal of the night.
Maegen Geypens (Oshawa, ON) rounded out the scoring at 12:21 of the third with a slap shot from the point the riccocheted off a Neumann defender and into the net for her first goal of the season.
#Sandra Grant (Abbotsford, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers)# (Abbotsford, BC) was excellent in net for the Tigers, making 23 saves and allowing just one goal. She kept RIT in the game in the first period, stopping all six shots she faced as the Tigers got off to a slow start offensively.
These same two teams will face-off again on Saturday at 3 pm in ECAC West action at Ritter Arena.
