GENESEO, NY -- The RIT women's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with a 78-61 loss at SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday night. Freshman
#Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# (Liverpool, NY) had nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds to lead the Tigers.
#Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport)# (Coudersport, PA) had 12 points to lead RIT.
The Tigers trailed 44-26 at halftime thanks to a 34-13 run by the Knights over the final 12:14 of the first half. RIT went 9-of-26 from the floor in the first half as #
Jasmine Maisonet (Baldwin, NY/Sacred Heart Academy)# (Baldwin, NY/Sacred Heart) led the Tigers with five first-half points.
Geneseo raced out to a 25-point lead in the second half before a 26-9 run by the Tigers cut the Knights lead to eight ponts with 5:49 to play.
Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) drained a three-pointer to get RIT within eight points. RIt had chances to get the score even closer but could missed some key shots down the stretch.
RIT outscored the Knights 35-34 in the second half, shooting 10-of-35 from the floor and 14-of-20 from the foul line. Furman scored eight of her 12 points in the second half.
The Tigers will host the RIT Invitational beginning on Saturday, November 22 when the Tigers will host SUNY Brockport at Clark Gymnasium at 2 p.m. followed SUNY Morrisville versus Mt. Aloysius College at 4 p.m. Sunday, the Tigers will host SUNY Morrisville at 2 p.m. That game will be preceded by SUNY Brockport versus Aloysius College at 12 p.m.
