STORRS, CT -- RIT, which came into the game in first place in the AHA standings, went 0-for-8 on the power play, including 0-for-2 with a two-man advantage, falling to the University of Connecticut 3-0 on Friday evening in AHA action in Storrs, Connecticut.
RIT fired 40 shots on net but UCONN goaltender Beau Erickson stood tall in net for the Huskies stopping all 40 shots he faced.
The loss was only the second loss by the Tigers in the month of January. RIT falls to 12-9-3 overall and 10-6-3 in the Atlantic Hockey Association.
UCONN converted both of their power play chancesin the second period, taking a 20 lead on a pair of goals by Andrew Olson. The first coming on a five-on-three at 2:15 of the second. He scored at 3:37 of the second on an assist from Justin Hernandez.
The Tigers had four power play chances in the second period but failed to convert on any of them as Beau Erickson came up with some solid stops for the Huskies.
Two of the Tigers power plays were two-man advantages. RIT had some good looks at net but Erickson came up big, holding the second-ranked power play in the AHA scoreless.
Five of the Tigers 13 first-period shots came from in close. The best chance came from senior
Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) (Toronto, ON) who had a really good look from in tight but couldn't sneak the puck past UCONN goaltender Beau Erickson.
RIT out shot the Huskies 40-23 but went 0-for-8 with the man advantage.
Louis Menard (Chicoutimi, PQ/Ottawa Jr. Senators) took the loss, allowing three goals and making 20 saves.
These same two teams will face one another again on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. at the Freidas Ice Forum.
