ITHACA, NY - The RIT volleyball squad improved to 5-1 in 2007 after winning both of its matches at the Ithaca Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Tigers defeated national power NYU 24-30, 30-28, 20-24, 30-19 and upended SUNY Oneonta 30-19, 30-20, 30-23.
In the win over NYU,
Jessica Schaffer (Wellington, OH/Keystone) (Wellington, OH/Keystone) recorded 20 kills. Senior
Michelle Skowzgird (Grayslake, IL/John Hersey) (Grayslake, IL/John Hersey) had a career-best eight blocks.
Nichole Boxler (Varysburg, NY/Attica) (Varysburg, NY/Attica) dished out 48 assists, while
Christine Rowinski (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) recorded 17 digs.
Against SUNY Oneonta, Schaffer pounded 18 kills to go along with four service aces.
Victoria Petko (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) (East Amherst, NY/East Amherst) recorded 11 kills, while Boxler had 37 assists. Freshman
Kristan Hernandez (Somerset, TX/Somerset) (Somerset, TX/Somerset) recorded 15 digs. Skowzgird added three blocks in the win.
RIT continues play in the Ithaca Tournament on Saturday with matches against nationally-ranked Juniata at 9 a.m. and Empire 8 foe St. John Fisher at 11 a.m.
