Volleyball Goes 1-1 on Sunday in Empire 8 Pool Play; Has Winning Streak Snapped at Nine Matches

The RIT volleyball team (14-3, 3-1 Empire 8) finished 1-1 on Sunday and 3-1 over the weekend in Empire 8 Pool Play at St. John Fisher College.  On Sunday, the Tigers defeated Utica 30-16, 30-21, 30-10 to extend their winning streak to nine matches to start the day, but had that streak snapped by nationally-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology, 23-30, 18-30, 17-30.

In the win over Utica, Jessica Schaffer (Wellington, OH/Keystone) (Wellington, OH/Keystone) led the way with 14 digs, 12 kills and a career-best 11 service aces.  Christine Rowinski (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) recorded 10 digs and five kills.  Nichole Boxler (Varysburg, NY/Attica) (Varysburg, NY/Attica) dished out 28 assists and recorded five blocks.  Shea Haney (Newark, DE/St. Elizabeth) (Newark, DE/St. Elizabeth) had eight kills and four blocks, while Victoria Petko (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) hit .357 with six kills and five blocks.

Schaffer led RIT with 10 kills, five digs and four blocks in the loss against Stevens, while Rowinski had 11 digs.

On Saturday, the Tigers defeated Hartwick in three games and came from behind to beat St. John Fisher in five games.

The Tigers will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, as they travel to play SUNY Cortland in a non-conference match starting at 7 p.m.
