Baseball Ties School Record for Wins in a Season With Victory Over Medaille

ROCHESTER, NY – Matt Austin (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) scored on a passed ball with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 5-5 tie and giving RIT a 6-5 victory over Medaille College on Wednesday afternoon.  The win is RIT’s 24th of the season, tying a school record set last season.
 
With the score tied at 5 in the eighth inning, Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) hit a two-out double to left field.  After Austin came in to pinch run, Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) hit an infield single, moving Austin to third.  Austin scored two pitches later.
 
The Tigers trailed 3-0 before plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. 
 
The Tigers loaded the bases with nobody out when Dan Christner (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Rodems hit back-to-back singles to score two runs and make it 3-2 Medaille.  Culotta and Matt George (Walton, NY/Walton) (Walton, NY/Walton) followed with RBI groundouts to give the Tigers the lead.
 
Medaille quickly regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth, but RIT came right back with a run in the sixth on a RBI single by George to tie the game at 5.
 
Medaille used eight different pitchers in the game, one in each inning.
 
Paul Schoeneck (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) picked up his third win of the season in relief, throwing two hitless innings.  Chad Hendy (Roseburg, OR/Glide) allowed just an unearned run in the three prior innings.  Rory Camardello (Brighton, NY/Brighton) (Brighton, NY/Brighton) made his first collegiate start, lasting four innings.
 
Rodems had three hits and a run batted in for RIT, while Culotta recorded two hits and a stolen base.  George drove in two runs.
 
Kevin Maluchnik, Don Jablonski, Derek Nero and Nick Andreassi each had two hits for the Mavericks.
 
With the win, RIT improves to 24-10 and Medaille falls to 14-20.
 
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, as they travel to SUNY Oneonta as the #3 seed in the ECAC Upstate Tournament.  RIT plays #2 St. John Fisher in the first round of the double elimination tournament at 1 p.m.
