Men's Lacrosse Beats St. John Fisher With Late Run

ROCHESTER, NY – Scott Farress (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder)’ goal with 7:05 to play in the fourth quarter broke a 7-7 tie as #2 RIT defeated St. John Fisher College 10-7 on Saturday afternoon in Empire 8 action. The win improves RIT to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8. The Cardinals fall to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8.

Matt Hargather gave St. John Fisher a 1-0 lead on an assist from Chris Schmidt early in the first quarter.

The Tigers ran off four straight goals to lead 4-1 after the first. Scott Farress (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) (Webster, NY), Trevor Hoselton (Skaneateles, NY), Andrew Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) (Corning, NY/Corning East) and Stephen Papa (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) (Niskayuna) all tallied goals for the Tigers in the quarter.

Phil Davenport (New Market, MD/Linganore) (New Market, MD/Linganre) opened the scoring in the second quarter with his second goal of the season, giving the Tigers a 5-1 lead.

Chris Schmidt and Matt Hargather each scored for the Cardinals to close RIT’s lead to 5-3 at the half.

Farress opened the scoring in the second half, expanding their lead to 6-3. Hargather and Schmidt scored consecutive goals, making it 6-5. After a Ruocco goal made it 7-5 Matt Kaiser and Hargather tied the score at 7-7.

With the score tied at 7-7 Farress drove around the net and scored his third goal of the day, giving the Tigers an 8-7 lead and the momentum.

Stephen Papa (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) drove from the top of the box and netted his second goal of the game, extending the lead to 9-7. Eric Pritchard (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) drove to the net and powered his past his defender, giving RIT a 10-7 lead.

St. John Fisher’s Dave Wood dominated the face-offs, winning 14-of-20. Phil Davenport (New Market, MD/Linganore) came in and won 5-of-9 face-offs, including 4-of-6 in the fourth quarter. He grabbed nine ground balls and played a solid game defensively.

RIT’s riding defense gave St. John Fisher fits. The Cardinals failed to clear the ball 14 times in 35 chances, giving RIT extra offensive chances.

Farress finished with three goals. Andrew Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) and Stephen Papa (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) each had two goals. Trevor Hoselton had a goal and two assists. John Foley (Arthur, ON/Our Lady of Lourdes) (Arthur, ON/Our lady of Lourdes) improved to 10-0, making nine saves.

RIT will face Ithaca College on Wednesday, April 11 at 4 pm on RIT Field.
