ROME, NY - The RIT baseball team extended its winning streak to six games and ran its record to 15-7 in 2007 after defeating Empire 8 foe Utica College in both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers won game one 6-3 and took game two by a score of 4-3.
RIT scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning in game two, erasing a 3-0 deficit.
The Tigers loaded the bases with one out when Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) drew a walk, scoring Brian Lindenau (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) to make the score 3-1. Matt George (Walton, NY/Walton) (Walton, NY/Walton) followed with a double, plating Matt Austin (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) and Jeff Bibbens (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) to tie the game at 3. Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) then lifted a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Culotta with the winning run.
Sophomore hurler Chris Miller (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) held Utica scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, finishing what he started to pick up his third win of the year. Miller allowed just four hits and struck four in the complete game win.
The Tigers started the day with a 6-3 win in game one. RIT erased a 2-0 first inning deficit with three runs in both the second and third innings to go up 6-2. From there, senior Dylan Rees (Wampsville, NY/Oneida) (Wampsville, NY/Oneida) did the rest, allowing just one more Utica run, while striking out nine, going the distance to pick up his fifth win of the season. All five of his wins this season have come by complete game.
Dornes, George, Andrew Larsen (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) and Ryan Tryt (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) had two hits apiece. Dornes had a double, triple and two RBI, while Tryt ripped a pair of doubles.
George had five hits on the afternoon, while Dornes ripped four more hits to raise his team-leading batting average to .467.
The Tigers are now 5-4 in Empire 8 play. Utica falls to 4-14 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
RIT is back in action on Friday, as they travel to play the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons in a doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m.
