Rochester, NY - The RIT men's tennis team hosted the first round of the Empire 8 Championships. The fourth seeded Tigers defeated fifth seeded Hartwick College, 7-2. The Tigers are now 5-4 (3-3 Empire 8's) and play first seeded Nazareth in the second round of the tournament.

In doubles action, teams of Han Chong (Penang, Malaysia/Penang Free School) (Penang, Malaysia/Penang Free School) and Gean Yip (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) and Joe Schember (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) (Erie, Pa/Mercyhurst Prep) and Alberto Lopez Samper (Zaragoza, Spain/O.L.M.) both defeated their opponents 8-2 at second and third doubles, respectively. Singles wins came from Brennan Dugas (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth), Chong, John Traver (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendahowa) (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendahowa), Schember. The winning match came from third singles with a win by Yip, 6-2, 6-4.

The Tigers host the Golden Flyers at 2 pm.
