ROCHESTER, NY - Pitching dominated on Saturday, as the RIT baseball team (9-5, 3-1 Empire 8) earned a split at St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 doubleheader on Saturday. The Tigers won game one 3-1, while the Cardinals took game two by a score of 2-1.
Senior hurler Dylan Rees (Wampsville, NY/Oneida) (Wampsville, NY/Oneida) was dominant in game one, as he twirled a complete-game seven hitter. Rees walked three and struck out two to pick up his fourth win of the year.
RIT scored a run in each of the last three innings to earn the win. Andy Scroger (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) (Spenceport, NY/Spencerport) tripled to lead off the top of the fifth and scored on a wild pitch to open the scoring.
In the top of the sixth inning, Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) led off with a triple and scored on a single by Ryan Tryt (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) to put RIT up 2-0. After the Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) led off with a single, stole second and scored on an infield single by Matt George (Walton, NY/Walton) (Walton, NY/Walton).
In game two, Chris Miller (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), Paul Schoeneck (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Chad Hendy (Roseburg, OR/Glide) (Roseburg, OR/Glide) allowed just four hits. Unfortunately for RIT, St. John Fisher pitcher Chad King held RIT to just three hits .
St. John Fisher scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. RIT cut the St. John Fisher lead in half in the third inning, as Dan Christner (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) reached on an error, advanced to third on a bunt and scored on a groundout by Andrew Larsen (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt) (Seattle, WA/Roosevelt).
The same two teams are back in action at St. John Fisher on Sunday morning with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
