HOBOKEN, N.J. – Senior goalkeeper
John Foley (Arthur, ON/Our Lady of Lourdes) (Arthur, ON/Our Lady of Lourdes) made 17 saves as the RIT men's lacrosse team, ranked second in the nation used an 7-1 run over the final 44:02 to win 10-5 over ninth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. RIT Head Coach Gene Peluso picked up his 100th career collegiate coaching win.
Senior attack
Dave DeMuth (Jordan, NY/Jordan Elbridge) (Jordan, NY/Jordan Elbridge) tallied three goals for the second straight game, while
Andrew Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) (Corning, NY/Corning East) scored twice and added two assists as the Tigers improved to 6-0 on the year.
Stevens (5-2) came out strong and quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening 4:10 of the game as J.R. Oreskovich and Joe Van Sickle found the back of the net. The Tigers came back with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead. Ruocco tallied twice sandwiched around a goal by leading scorer
Eric Pritchard (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) (Webster, NY/Webster Schroder).
Back-to-back goals by Van Sickle gave the Ducks to a 4-3 lead with 14:02 remaining in the second quarter. RIT’s defense stiffened from there, holding Stevens to just one goal the rest of the game.
Trailing 4-3 with just over eight minutes left in the second quarter, RIT received four straight goals from DeMuth,
Brandon Wilkin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (Penfield, NY/Penfield),
Wes Adam (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) and Pritchard to take a 7-4 lead at intermission.
Pritchard's second goal gave him 100 points at RIT on 70 goals and 30 assists. He became the 33rd Tiger to reach that milestone.
DeMuth’s second goal of the game, which came with 5:50 to play in the third quarter, extended the margin to 8-4 as the Tigers continued to pull away.
Mark Bielecky cut the RIT lead to 8-5 with just three seconds left in the third quarter, but RIT held strong and received fourth quarter goals from Adam and DeMuth to complete the scoring.
With the win, Foley now has 41 in his stellar four-year career, tying him with Adam Platzer, who played from 1997-2000, for second on the all-time career list at RIT. Foley needs just three more wins to become the all-time leader in the history of the RIT men's lacrosse program.
Junior midfielder
Jacob Brunner (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) was 10-for-18 in faceoffs and totaled a team-high six ground balls.
Stevens out-shot RIT 40-33 and had 33 ground balls to RIT's 30. The Ducks were successful on 20 of 21 clearing attempts (95.2 percent). RIT converted 16 of 25 clears (64.0 percent). Both teams combined to go 0-for-9 in extra-man opportunities.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, as they open up the Empire 8 schedule with a road contest at Elmira. The contest will begin at 3:30 p.m.
