WALTHAM, MA -- The RIT men's hockey team tied Bentley 2-2 in Atlantic Hockey Association action on Saturday evening. The tie gives RIT a 5-5-3 overall record and a 4-3-3 record in the AHA.
"We'll take the three points," stated Head Coach
Wayne Wilson. "We only took two points from them last year, so its an improvement."
Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) (Ste.-Therese, PQ) gave the Tigers an early lead, scoring 41 seconds into the contest off assists from
Justin Hofstetter (Bright, ON/Cambridge Winterhawks) (Bright, ON) and
Tyler Mazzei (Kelowna, BC/Nanaimo Clippers) (Kelowna, BC). The goal was the eighth of the season for Lambert.
That score held up until 16:22 of the second period when Marc Menzione struck. Erik Peterson took a shot that
Louis Menard (Chicoutimi, PQ/Ottawa Jr. Senators) (Chicoutimi, PQ) saved, but the rebound came right to Menzione who jammed it home, tying the score at 1-1.
Bobby Raymond (Lucknow, ON/Owen Sound Greys) (Nepean, ON) gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead early in the third period. Raymond scored on a hard wrist-shot at 3:33 of the third.
Jesse Newman (Kelowna, BC/Trail Smokeeaters) (Kelowna, BC) and
Justin Hofstetter (Bright, ON/Cambridge Winterhawks) had the assists on the play. It was Hoftstetter's second assist of the evening.
Bentley tied it at 2-2 on a goal by Ben Canzoneri at 15:39 of the third.
The Tigers,
Sean Murphy (Rochester, MN/Green Bay Gamblers) (Owatonna, MN), looked to have scored the game-winner early in the overtime. He swept in and looked to have the game-winner. The red light went on, but the referees waived off the goal.
Both teams had a power play chance in the overtime but neither team could capitalize.
"We're not putting teams away when we've got them down," said Wilson. "We've got to get some people going offensively and improve on the power play."
The Tigers out-shot the Falcons 44-32. Menard made 32 saves while Joe Calvi stopped 42 shots. The Tigers went 0-for-5 with the man advantage and Bentley went 1-for-4.
RIT will travel to Springfield, Massachusetts next weekend for a weekend series versus American International College.
