WALTHAM, MA - The RIT men's hockey team (5-5-2, 4-3-2 Atlantic Hockey) pushed its unbeaten streak to four games after defeating Bentley College (5-9-1, 5-4-1 Atlantic Hockey) 3-2 in conference action on Friday evening. The Tigers scored three second period goals to take control of the contest.
The Tigers are now 2-0-2 in their last four games, all in Atlantic Hockey play.
Senior forward
Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) (Ste. Therese, PQ) scored a goal and an assist to lead the Tigers. Lambert played in his 100th game this evening. He has 49 goals and 67 assists for 116 points in those contests.
Freshman forward
Andrew Favot (King City, ON/Aurora Tigers) (King City, ON) scored the eventual game-winning tally with 1:14 left in the second period. He took a pass from
Brent Alexin (West Seneca, NY/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) (West Seneca, NY) and crashed the net to jam the puck in for his first collegiate goal.
Justin Hofstetter (Bright, ON/Cambridge Winterhawks) (Bright, ON) also assisted on the goal.
The Tigers out-shot Bentley 39-28. including 25-15 over the first two periods.
Goaltender
Louis Menard (Chicoutimi, PQ/Ottawa Jr. Senators) (Chicoutimi, PQ) picked up his fifth win of the season, stopping 26 shots. Joe Calvi made 36 saves for the Falcons.
RIT Head Coach
Wayne Wilson thought his team took control of the contest after the first period.
"I thought we played a great second period, one of our best periods of the season," said Wilson. "We worked hard and it paid off with three second period goals."
Bentley scored the lone goal of the first period, as Jeff Gumaer ripped a shot past Menard right off a face-off in the Tigers zone. Anthony Canozeri won the draw cleanly to Gumaer. Gumaer's shot went over the glove hand over Menard.
RIT held an 11-7 edge in shots after one period of play, but took most of its shots from the perimeter.
Matt Crowell (Kelowna, BC/Williams Lake Timberwolves) (Kelowna, BC) tied the game for the Tigers 2:15 into the second period, while RIT was enjoying a 5-on-3 power-play. The goal was Crowell's fifth of the season. Lambert and
Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) (Toronto, ON) assisted on the goal.
Lambert's goal with 3:17 left in the second period put RIT up 2-1.
Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) (Oakville, ON) fed Crowell, who found Lambert all alone at the side of the net. Lambert calmly tapped the puck into the wide open side.
RIT kept its momentum going in the third period, generating several chances.
Jaye Judd scored for Bentley with 15 seconds left in regulation, with the net pulled for a sixth-attacker.
RIT leads the all-time series 5-3-0 and are 3-2-0 against the Falcons since RIT moved to Division I in 2005. Last season the two teams split the season series, 2-2-0.
The same two teams are in action on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
