POTSDAM, NY -- Peter Frandina (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) and
John Braswell (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy) (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy) scored first half goals to lift the RIT men’s soccer team to its first win of the season, 2-0 over Clarkson University in a non-league game Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.
With the win, RIT improved to 1-4-1 on the season. The Golden Knights dropped to 0-5-1 overall.
Neither team produced many legitimate chances in the first minutes of the half, but the Tigers were able to strike 20 minutes in when Frandina lofted a shot from about 20 yards out over the outstretched arms of Clarkson goalie Mike St. Croix, who could only get a finger on the ball.
The Tigers produced their second goal at the 37:28 mark when Andrew Ong (Phuket, Thailand/SKL) (Phuket, Thailand/SKL) fed Braswell. Braswell shot a bounding groundball that St. Croix overslid in his attempt to make the stop.
The second half saw both teams with decent chances, but both were unable to put another goal on the scoreboard.
Alan Smith (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) made six saves for his first collegiate win and shutout for RIT, while St. Croix stopped eight shots for the Knights.
RIT led 15-8 in shots and owned a 10-6 advantage in attempts on goal.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, as they begin Empire 8 conference play with a home match against Utica College. The game will be at RIT Field and begin at 12 p.m.
