Baseball Sweeps Medaille; Extends Winning Streak to Seven Games

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (21-14, 10-6 Empire 8) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to extend its winning streak to a season-high seven games after sweeping Medaille College 11-4 and 4-3 on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at RIT Field.
 
Senior Adam Gerentine (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) drove in Alex Alongi (Rochester, NY/C.G. Finney) (Rochester, NY/C.G. Finney) with one out in the bottom of the seventh for the deciding run.
 
RIT trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, when catcher Ryan Tryt (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) led off the inning with a single.  Alongi attempted a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by the Medaille catcher into center field, giving RIT runners at first and third with no outs.  The Tigers then perfected a double steal, as Alongi swiped second and the throw went into centerfield, scoring Tryt, as Alongi moved to third, setting up Gerentine’s heroics.
 
Alongi gave RIT a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as he hit a two-run single with the bases loaded.
 
Dylan Rees (Wampsville, NY/Oneida) (Wampsville, NY/Oneida) improved to 7-3 in 2006, as he allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out six batters in his seventh complete-game outing of the season.
 
Rich Urbanczyk gave Medaille (13-29) a 3-2 lead in the third inning with a two-out, two-run single.
 
The Tigers had scored at least nine runs in six straight games before game two and 77 total during the streak.
 
In game one, RIT scored five runs before Medaille recorded an out en route to the victory.
 
Sophomore Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) was 3-for-4 with a long home run, two runs scored and two RBI.  Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and two runs batted in.  Andy Scroger (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) also had two hits and drove in two runs. 
 
Mike Fox (Victor, NY/Victor) (Victor, NY/Victor) improved to 5-3 on the year, as he allowed just four hits and two runs in six innings, while striking out six batters.
 
Between games, the Tigers honored seniors Fox, Singer, Gerentine, Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) (Avon, NY/Avon), Steve Skalocky (North Bellmore, NY/W.C. Mepham) (North Bellmore, NY/W.C. Mepham), Nick Bell (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) and Colin Bradley (Barre, VT/Spaulding) (Barre, VT/Spaulding).
 
Bradley also had two hits in the nightcap.  Both Bradley and Tosh have 48 hits this season, two away from tying the Tiger single-season record.
 
RIT is back in action on Thursday, as they travel to Cortland State to play the Red Dragons.  First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.
