Baseball Narrowly Defeated by #3 SUNY Cortland; Singer Breaks Single Season Run Record

CORTLAND, NY -
The RIT baseball team (21-15, 10-6 Empire 8) held leads of 4-0 and 8-2, but could not hang on, as the Tigers fell to #3 Cortland State 9-8 on Thursday afternoon.

Senior centerfielder Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) broke the RIT single-season record for runs in a season, as he scored his 38th run of the year. He is also tied for the single-season mark in walks with 27.

RIT jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as Brian Lindenau (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) doubled in Singer.

The Tigers expanded the lead to 4-0 in the second, as Singer drove in a pair with a double and Adam Gerentine (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) singled in a run.

After Cortland cut the Tiger lead to 4-2 on a two-run single by Zach Tachelli, RIT tacked on four more, all with two outs in the third to take an 8-2 lead.

Jim Miller (Rochester. NY/Rush Henrietta) (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) hit a bases-loaded single to drive in two runs and give RIT a 6-2 advantage.  Singer then singled in Dan Christner (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Miller for RIT's final runs of the day.

Cortland (37-7), the 2006 SUNYAC Champions, roared back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh to take the 9-8 lead.

Jason Chyr picked up the win for the Red Dragons, throwing 4 1/3 innings of shut-out ball.  Justin Mattes threw two scoreless innings to earn the save.

Singer was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Tigers.  Andy Scroger (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) had two hits and scored a run, while Christner finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

Tachelli was 3-for 4 with a home run. two runs scored and four RBI for the Red Dragons.  Matt Vitalone also homered for Cortland.  Both homers came in the Red Dragons three-run seven inning.

RIT finishes its 2006 regular season with a doubleheader at SUNY Oswego on Saturday.  First pitch is at 12 p.m.
