HORNELL, NY -- The RIT softball team split a pair of Empire 8 Conference games versus Alfred University on Saturday afternoon at Hornell High School. The Tigers (9-9, 3-3 Empire 8) dropped the opener, 4-2, but came back to win the nightcap, 10-9, in eight innings.
In game one, sophomore pitcher Amanda Morehouse (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) took the loss on the mound, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out three. Rightfielder Breana Sniezek (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg) had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Tigers.
Brittany Curran earned the win on the mound for Alfred (5-13, 3-1 Empire 8), allowing one earned run on six hits over seven innings while striking out three and walking none. Andrea Sarro hit a two-run homer
In game two, both teams scored four runs in the first before Alfred took a 6-5 lead after three. RIT went ahead 7-6 after scoring a pair of runs in the fourth before Alfred took a 9-8 lead into the bottom of the seventh. RIT tied the game up with a run and won the game an inning later on junior Josa Hanzlik (Fairport, NY/Fairport)’s (Fairport, NY/Fairport) RBI single.
Senior Caitlin Krumm (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) hit her first collegiate home run, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs to lead RIT. Mary Keegan (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) pitched four innings, allowing just an earned run on six hits to pick up her first victory of the year.
Vicchio went 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI and Curran had four hits, four RBIs and a run scored to lead Alfred.
The Tigers are back in action on Sunday. as they host Medaille in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
