ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT baseball team (9-7, 4-0 Empire 8) had its seven-game winning streak snapped by SUNY Brockport on Thursday afternoon by a score of 5-3 in 10 innings on a cool, sunny day at the RIT Field.
The Golden Eagles broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the tenth, as Jim Debay and Tim Wilson led off with back-to-back doubles. Jeff Schwegler then singled home Wilson to put Brockport up 5-3.
RIT rallied back from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 3.
Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) (Avon, NY/Avon) got the Tigers to within 3-2, as he drove in both
Adam Gerentine (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) and
Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) with a hard single to right field. Sapienza then stole home on a perfectly executed double steal to knot the score.
RIT had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, as Singer led off with a single and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Lindenau (Tucson, AZ/Sabino). Unfortunately for the Tigers, Singer was left stranded on second.
Tim Mascari picked up the win for the Golden Eagles (9-9, 2-2 SUNYAC), pitching three scoreless innings.
SUNY Brockport opened the scoring in the top of the first, as Tom Weiner hit a lead-off double and scored on a passed ball later in the inning.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the fourth and seventh to go up 3-0.
RIT senior catcher
Colin Bradley (Barre, VT/Spaulding) (Barre, VT/Spaulding) threw out four Golden Eagles would be base-stealers.
Singer and Bradley had two hits apiece for RIT. Weiner was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI for SUNY Brockport, while Debay and Wilson each had a pair of doubles and a RBI.
Nick Rappa (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY/Fairport) took the loss for RIT, allowing his first runs of the season in his eighth appearance of the season.
Pat Walters (Rochester, NY/Webster) (Webster, NY/Webster) got the start for the Tigers, allowing six hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Anthony Culotta (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili),
Chad Hendy (Roseburg, OR/Glide) and
Dylan Rees (Wampsville, NY/Oneida) (Wampsville, NY/Oneida) combined to pitch 3 2/3 innings of no-hit relief.
The Tigers are right back in action on Friday and Saturday, as they travel to Empire 8 rival Ithaca to play the Bombers in a pair of doubleheaders. Both twin-bills begin at 1 p.m.
