ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT women's softball team (8-8, 2-2 Empire 8) earned a hard-fought split against visiting Buffalo State College on Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 5-3 and falling in game two 8-3.
IN game one, junior Josa Hanzlik (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY/Fairport) hit her first home run of the season, a towering drive over the left field fence in the bottom of the third inning to give RIT a 4-0 lead. Amanda Morehouse (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) made sure the lead stood, allowing just five hits and three unearned runs in seven innings of work to pick up her team-best fourth win of the season.
Hanzlik had two hits and drove in three runs for RIT, who took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Nikki Taylor (Oswego, NY/Oswego) (Oswego, NY/Oswego) led off with a single and was moved to second after a single by Caitlin Krumm (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North). Both runners moved up on a passed ball, and while neither the pitcher or catcher was paying attention after that play, Taylor took off for home and beat the throw. Hanzlik then singled in Krumm.
After Buffalo State cut the lead to 4-3 with three two-out runs in the fourth, Heidi Schille (Lake George, NY/Lake George) (Lake George, NY/Lake George) put RIT up 5-3 in the sixth inning with a RBI double.
Nicole Sabuda had two RBI for the Bengals in game one.
In game two, the Bengals used five runs in the fourth inning to jump out to a 6-1 lead and win 8-3. Laurie Hutten was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI for the Bengals. Lindsey Matheis was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Jolene Banach was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Krumm, Stephanie Nailos (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) and Jenna Mausolf (Hudson, NY/Hudson) (Hudson, NY/Hudson) each had a RBI for the Tigers in game two.
RIT is back in action on Saturday as they travel to Alfred to play the Saxons in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
