ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT baseball team exploded for 12 runs on 18 hits en route to their third straight win, 12-1 win over Cazenovia College on Tuesday afternoon on a cool, sunny day at the RIT Field.
Freshman
Chris Miller (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) earned his first collegiate win, allowing just four hits and a run in five innings.
Bill Scorse (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili),
Nick Bell (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown),
Pat Walters (Rochester, NY/Webster) (Webster, NY/Webster) and
Nick Rappa (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY/Fairport) combined to pitch four innings of scoreless relief in the win.
RIT (5-6) opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first, as the first three runners reached base.
Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led off with a textbook bunt right down the third base line for an infield single and was moved over to second after
Brian Lindenau (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) singled up the middle. After a wild pitch,
Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) (Avon, NY/Avon) ripped a single up the middle, scoring both runners to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Dan Christner (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) made the defensive play of the game, diving to his left, fully extended to rob Brian Petrick of a base hit in the second inning.
The Wildcats (1-4) cut the Tigers lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth, as Derek Zehr hit a sacrifice fly to left center, driving in Lance Farino. Singer robbed Zehr of extra base hits on the play, covering a lot of ground and making a diving catch.
Adam Gerentine (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) extended the Tiger lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a bases-loaded single to center, driving in
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) and Christner.
RIT broke the game open in the fifth, scoring six runs on five hits to go up 10-1. The first four Tigers reached base, all on singles. Tosh drove in a run with a single, and was followed by Christner’s two run single. Christner scored two batters later on a wild pitch. The Tigers finished the scoring in the inning when a bases-loaded ground ball hit by Sapienza was misplayed into two runs.
Gerentine went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Sapienza had two hits and three RBI, while Christner and Tosh both had two hits. Christner also scored twice and drove in three runs. Thirteen different Tigers recorded at least one hit for RIT.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday and Sunday, as they open up conference play by hosting Utica in pair of doubleheaders. Saturday’s twin-bill begins at 1 p.m., while Sunday’s starts at noon.
