CANTON, NY - St. Lawrence (5-0) ended the game on a 7-0 run, erasing a late 54-50 RIT lead and handing the Tiger men's basketball team a 57-54 defeat on Saturday afternoon.
RIT took a 54-50 lead on a pair of 3-pointers by Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) with three minutes left to give RIT a 54-50 lead. Matt Blue hit a 3-pointer to pull St. Lawrence to within one at 54-53 with 2:02 left. After a missed shot by the Tigers, Tom Wopperer gave the Saints a 55-54 lead with a layup with 1:10 left.
RIT had several chances to take the lead, as they snagged two offensive rebounds and put up three shots in the next minute, before St. Lawrence finally got possession. Tyler Shaver hit two free throws to put St. Lawrence up three. Kenny Gethers (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) had a chance to tie the game, but he missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Zeinfeld led the Tigers with 18 points. Senior center Tim Bacon (Massena. NY/Massena) (Massena, NY/Massena) recorded 16 points, seven rebounds and a block, while Gethers recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
The game was very close the entire way, as the biggest lead for either team was six points and there were eight ties and 15 lead changes.
The Tigers shot just 32.3 percent from the field and had just two assists. St. Lawrence shot 41 percent and only dished out six assists
Shaver led the Saints with 15 points, while Wopperer chipped in with 14.
