ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (7-6-3, 5-1-1 E8) women’s soccer team clinched the second seed in the Empire 8 Tournament with a 3-1 win over St. John Fisher College (7-7-2, 3-4-0 E8) on Wednesday afternoon. The loss eliminates the Cardinals from playoff contention.
RIT struck first when
Emily Stecher (New Cannan, CT/New Cannan) (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) converted on a penalty kick with 32 minutes remaining in the first half.
Alaina Chorney (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) was hauled down inside the penalty box by a Fisher defender, drawing the penalty from the referee.
St. John Fisher tied the score with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Kelly Zeppetella served a corner right into the box. Kaelyn Witz headed the ball past a diving
Ashley Conti (Canfield, OH/Canfield), tying the score at 1-1.
The Tigers re-took the lead with less than four minutes to play in the first half.
Erica Main (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) picked a loose ball in the box and ripped a low shot past Stacey Gable, giving RIT a 2-0 lead.
Each team fired five shots in the first half.
Ashley Conti (Canfield, OH/Canfield) (Canfield, OH/Canfield) had to make just one save and Stacey Gable did not make a save.
RIT had two golden opportunities in the second half.
Melanie Bryant (Lancaster, NY/Sacred Heart)’s (Lancaster, NY/Sacred Heart) header just went over the cross bar and
Emily Traversi (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough)’s (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) shot from inside the six-yard box dinged off the post.
Brittany Peters (Marion, NY/Marion) (Marion, NY/Marion) rounded out the scoring in the 90
th minute.
Alaina Chorney (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) started the play with a pass to
Melanie Bryant (Lancaster, NY/Sacred Heart). She fed a low pass into the box that Peters ran onto and headed into the back of the net for a 3-1 lead.
RIT out shot the Cardinals 16-5 as
Ashley Conti (Canfield, OH/Canfield) picked up the win, making one save.
RIT will host Utica College on Thursday, November 2 at RIT Field in one semifinal. The winner will play the winner of the other semifinal between Ithaca and Nazareth.
