ONEONTA, NY - The RIT Women's Volleyball team won the 2005 Red Dragon Invitational on Saturday, winning three straight matches to go 5-0 on the weekend. In the championship match, the Tigers outlasted the hosts 25-30, 30-19, 30-16, 30-28. RIT won 15-of-16 games over the two day tournament. In addition, senior setter Katie Werner (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) was named the tournament's MVP, while fellow senior Christina Anabel (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) earned All-Tournament team honors.
In the first match of the day, RIT quickly dispatched Russell Sage 30-23, 30-20, 30-25. Werner led the way with 32 assists and 12 digs. First-year Jessica Schaffer (Wellington, OH/Keystone) (Wellington, OH/Keystone) recorded 20 digs and had eight kills. Laura Grell (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) added 17 digs, while Anabel had eight kills, eight digs and five aces.
In their second match of the day, the Tigers defeated Union 30-20, 30-19, 30-16. Christine Rowinski (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) led the way with 21 digs, while Werner dished out 25 assists. Anabel had 15 kills to go along with three service aces.
In the championship match, Werner dished out a career-best 50 assists, while recording 16 digs. Grell finished with 21 digs. Laurie Underhill (East Aurora, NY/Mt. Mercy) (East Aurora, NY/Mt. Mercy) had six blocks to go along with 11 kills.
Anabel continued her strong play, recording 20 digs and 19 kills. Senior Bonnie Harriman (Danbury, CT/Danbury) (Danbury, CT/Danbury) chipped in with 17 digs and 13 kills, while sophomore Cecilia Enestrom (Medicine Hat, AB/McCoy) (Medicine Hat, AB/McCoy) contributed 18 digs, 13 kills and three aces.
RIT (5-0) is back in action on Friday and Saturday, as they travel to Ithaca College to play in the Ithaca College Invitational.
