CANTON, NY - The RIT Baseball team (14-12, 4-3 Empire 8) squandered a 5-4 ninth inning lead en route to a 6-5 loss versus St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon.
St. Lawrence won the game with a leadoff single, and four RIT errors on the next two plays that gave the Saints the win.
RIT trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning, when Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) (Avon, NY/Avon) hit a towering two-run home-run down the right field line to cut the Saints lead to 3-2. After St. Lawrence scored a run in the bottom of the frame to go up 4-2, the Tigers responded with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up 5-4.
Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/HF-L) led off the inning with a walk and got over to third on a one-out single by Scott Schneider (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena). John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) followed with a single down the left field line, driving in Singer to make it 4-3. After a Colin Bradley (Barre, VT/Spaulding) (Barre, VT/Spaulding) single loaded the bases, Sapienza drew a walk to bring in Schneider and tie the game at 4. The Tigers took their first lead of the game, when Adam Gerentine (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) walked with the bases loaded, driving in Byrne to give RIT a 5-4 lead.
Tiger pitcher Bo Mahaney (Burdett, NY/Watkins Glen) (Burdett, NY/Watkins Glen) pitched seven strong innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs, while striking out six. Paul Schoeneck (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) pitched a scoreless eight inning and took the loss, as he pitched to the two batters in the ninth innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs.
Sapienza finished 1-for-3 with a homer and three RBI. Schneider went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
RIT will face Clarkson University on Sunday.
