ONEONTA, NY -- The #4 RIT (18-14) baseball team defeated #1 Oneonta State, 8-2 in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III Upstate Baseball championship. The Tigers will face the winner of the St. John Fisher versus Plattsburgh State game on Saturday in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. in Oneonta, NY.
The Tigers got a strong pitching performance from
Mike Fox (Victor, NY/Victor) (Victor, NY/Victor) who went 6 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run. He scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked four.
John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) led RIT going 3-for-4 with a double and a ome run. He scored two runs and drove in two runs.
Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/HF-L),
Scott Schneider (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena),
Colin Bradley (Barre, VT/Spaulding) (Barre, VT),
Rob Ogborne (Rochester, NY/Penfield) (Rochester, NY/Penfield) each had two hits for the Tigers who had 13 on the day.
After falling behind 1-0 the Tigers came back in the fourth and put up four runs. Schneider led off the fourth with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third on a passed ball.
John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) walked and Collin Bradley singled scoring Schneider. Three batters later with Byrne on third
Brian Lindenau (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) hit a sacrifice fly scoring Byrne for a 2-1 lead.
Rob Ogborne (Rochester, NY/Penfield) and
Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) each walked with bases loaded, scoring the Tigers final two runs in the inning, giving them a 4-1 lead.
After a run in the fifth made it 6-1 the Tigers put up a three spot in the sixth to put the game away. With one
Rob Ogborne (Rochester, NY/Penfield) singled to center field.
Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled to right center moving Ogborne to
third. Ogborne came into scor on a passed ball. After a walk to Schneider Byrne singled to left field, scoring Singer. Colin Bradley reached on an error by the short stop scoring Schneider.
Fox took care of the rest as he earned his seventh win of the season.
