ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT Women's Softball team (7-7, 2-0 Empire 8) kicked off its Empire 8 season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over Alfred University. RIT won game one in eight innings, 1-0, thanks to a RBI single by Stephanie Nailos (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) (Pittsfield, ME/Taconic) and took game two by a score of 7-2.
With pinch runner Heidi Schille (Lake George, NY/Lake George) (Lake George, NY/Lake George) placed on second base in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Tigers, with only their second base runner of the game, took advantage. Nailos then came through with a single to left to provide the only run of the game.

Alfred starting pitcher Heidi Brooks was equally impressive, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. She allowed just two hits and struck out four over 7 1/3 innings.
First-year second baseman Katie Grenga (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) broke up Brooks' no-hit bied with a clean double to left field with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning for RIT's only other hit of the game.

The Tigers got off to a great start, scoring two runs in both first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. RIT added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to complete their scoring.
Josa Hanzlik (Fairport, NY/Fairport) hit her team leading seventh and eighth doubles of the season, while scoring twice. Nailos also recorded two hits. Caitlin Krumm (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) also drove in a run.
Second-year pitcher Mary Keegan (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca) allowed just six hits and one earned run in seven innings. She walked two and struck out five to improve to 3-3 on the year. In addition, she also drove in a run.
