Click For Boxscore of Game #1Click For Boxscore of Game #2BROCKPORT, NY -- The RIT (6-4) baseball team returned to action on Wednesday with a split against #13 Brockport State. The Tigers defeated the Golden Eagles, 8-7 in the first game, but Brockport came back in the second game to win, 6-5.
RIT took an early lead in the first inning of the game #1 when Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) scored on an error. After a scoreless second and third inning, the Tigers came up big in the fourth with three runs. Andy Scroger (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) singled home Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) (Avon, NY/Avon) and John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East). Sophomore Brian Lindenau (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) then singled to centerfield driving home Scott Schneider (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) (Rochester, NYGreece Athena) for a 4-0 lead.
Brockport rallied in the bottom of the fifth with one run and then in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs. John Morgan (Hilton) doubled to right center driving in Paul Sova (Rochester) in the fifth, while Rob Maxwell (Amherst) sacrifice bunted in the bottom of the sixth sending home Sean Davis (Brockport) and Ryan Mohr (Cheektowaga) to close the gap, 4-3.
In the seventh, Byrne doubled and then advanced to third on a throwing error, sending home Colin Bradley (Barre, VT/Spaulding) (Barre, VT/Spaulding) and Rob Ogborne (Rochester, NY/Penfield) (Rochester, NYPenfield).
Brockport was not to be outdone however, when they tallied three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Andy Petersen (Bloomingburg) doubled driving home Morgan and Sova. Mike Sparks (N. Tonawanda) then singled driving in Petersen to tie the game 7-7. James Debay (Rochester) had the opportunity to send Sparks home to take an 8-7 lead, but struck out looking.
The Tigers scored the gamewinning run with Bradley's RBI in the top of the eighth.
Andrew Olek (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY/Fairport) picked up the win for the Tigers, while Scott Ryan (Dexter) took the loss.
In the second game, Brockport came out strong, scoring four runs in the first and two in the second. Tom Weiner (Maybrook) scored when Joe Lux (Endicott) walked. Petersen's and Davis' RBI put Brockport up 3-0. Lux scored the fourth run when Jeff Schwegler (Niagara Fall) flied out to centerfield. In the second inning, Lux's homerun drove in Sova, giving Brockport 6-0 lead. Brockport couldn't get on the board for rest of the game, but were able to survive an R.I.T. rally.
RIT scored twice in the third, once in the fourth, and twice more in the seventh. In the third, Singer's two-run home put the Tigers on the board. In the fourth, Schneider's RBI edged the gap closer to 6-3. In the seventh, Singers's single sent home Scroger and Schneider for the final score of 6-5.
Jared Perham (Camden/Camden) earned the win, while Nick Rappa (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY/Fairport) took the loss. The Tigers host Hartwick College on Saturday and Utica College on Sunday.
