ROCHESTER, NY -
John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, two runs scored and a RBI, but it was not enough, as RIT fell to cross-town rival University of Rochester 10-7 on Wednesday.

The match-up was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, but game two was wiped out due to heavy rain.

U of R jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of a two-RBI triple by Dan Price and a single by Dan Pfohl, which knocked in Price.  The Yellowjackets added two more in the top of the second frame for a 5-0 lead.

RIT quickly fought back, scoring four runs in their half of the second inning to cut the Yellowjackets lead to 5-4.  The first five men of the inning reached base.  Byrne and Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) (Avon, NY/Avon) singled and were moved up a base when Rob Ogborne (Rochester, NY/Penfield) (Penfield, NY/Penfield) was hit by a pitch.  With the bases loaded,  Andy Scroger (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and Adam Gerentine (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) delivered RBI singles to make it 5-2.  After a strikeout, Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls Lima) ripped a two-run double, cutting Rochester's lead to one run.

The Yellowjackets quickly came back however, scoring two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to up their lead to 10-4.

Scroger got RIT to within 10-5 in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI groundout.

Scott Schneider (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Byrne hit consecutive RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth inning to close out the scoring.

Price finished 3-for-3, needing only a home run for the cycle.  He also drive in three runs and scored three times for Rochester (16-11-1).

Scroger finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI for RIT (11-8, 3-2), who have now lost four straight.  Schneider and Sapienza each had two hits, while first-year hurler Paul Schoeneck (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) pitched three scoreless innings in relief.

Brady Noon picked up the win, while Nick Bell (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) took the loss.  Mike Zollweg pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the save.

The game was delayed for 30 minutes due to rain.

RIT is back in action on Saturday, as they host Empire 8 foe St. John Fisher in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
