ITHACA, NY - The RIT Baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, as they were swept by Empire 8 rival Ithaca, by scores of 9-3 and 11-2 on Saturday.
In game one, Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led off the top pf the first inning with his third home run of the season to give RIT a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived however, as Ithaca tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first and added three more runs in the second inning to make it 4-1.
Outfielder Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) (Avon, NY/Avon) cut Ithaca's lead to 4-3 with a mammoth two-run home run to center field in the to top the fourth inning.
Ithaca put the game away, scoring a run in the fourth and two each in the fifth and sixth to hand RIT its first loss in six games.
Mike Fox (Victor, NY/Victor) (Victor, NY/Victor) who was one-out away from a no-hitter in his previous start, allowed 13 hits and six earned runs in five innings, as he fell to 3-2 on the season.
In game two, Ithaca (12-10, 3-1 Empire 8) scored seven runs in the second inning and went up 8-0 before RIT got on the board.
John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) and Andy Scroger (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) drove in a run apiece for the Tigers (11-6, 3-2 Empire 8).
RIT is back in action on Sunday, as they travel to Union College to play one, nine-inning game at 1 p.m.
