ROCHESTER, NY - Mike Fox (Victor, NY/Victor) (Victor, NY/Victor) pitched 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball in game one on Sunday, as the RIT Baseball team swept a pair of games from Empire 8 rival Utica, 3-1 and 13-2 at the RIT Field.
Fox was brilliant, striking out 11 batters and throwing just 85 pitches en route to his third win of the season. His bid for a no-hitter was broken up with two outs in the seventh inning, as Joe DeCondo ripped a shot up the middle that Tiger second baseman Brian Lindenau (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) made a diving stop on to knock the ball down. Fox walked just one and scattered three RIT errors. Utica's lone run was unearned.
RIT took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, as Rob Ogborne (Rochester, NY/Penfield) (Rochester, NY/Penfield) led off with a double, and was driven in by Lindenau's triple to the right center-field gap.
The Tigers tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Matt Singer (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeyoe Falls) doubled to lead off the inning and then stole third base. Colin Bradley (Barre, VT/Spaulding) (Barre, VT/Spaulding) then drove in Singer with a double of his own to make it 2-0. After advancing to third on a groundout, Bradley then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
In game two, the Tigers scored a season-high 13 runs en route to a 13-2 win. John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) (East Amherst, NY/Willamsville East) finished 3-for-4 with a double and four runs batted in. Adam Gerentine (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) (Poughkeepsie, NY/Marlboro) was also 3-for-4, scoring three runs. Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon) (Avon, NY/Avon) finished 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Scott Schneider (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) ripped two hits and drove in two runs. Jim Miller (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) also drove in two runs.
Nick Rappa (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY/Fairport), improved to 2-2 on the season, pitching six strong innings, allowing six hits and striking out three batters. Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/) (Woodbine,MD) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Singer finished 2-for-2 with four runs scored and three walks in game two. He stole five bases in the two games combined. Singer is now 11-for-11 on the season in steals and is hitting .452 in 2005.
The Tigers ripped 16 hits in game two.
RIT is back in action on Tuesday,as they host Keuka in a doubleheader at RIT Field, beginning at 2 p.m.
