Men's Lacrosse Falls to #4 Cortland State

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's lacrosse team fell to #4 Cortland State 12-9 on a sunny afternoon at RIT's Turf Field. The loss drops RIT to 1-4 on the season, while Cortland State improves to 5-0.

It took RIT just seven seconds to get on the scoreboard. Jacob Cannan (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) (Irondequoit, NY/Irondeqoit) won the face-off, scooped up the ground ball and began the break. Cannan fed to Colin Jesien (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-S. Dorchester) (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-S. Dorchester) who scored on a rifle shot, giving the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead.

The Red Dragons regrouped and ripped off four straight goals, taking a 4-1 lead. Adam Hughes (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) tied the score at 13:48 and Adam Hyde (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) scored three straight goals for Cortland State.

Jesien made it 4-2 with 8:26 to play in the opening quarter on his second goal of the quarter. Zach Bednarz (Webster, NY/Webster) (Webster, NY/Webster) pulled RIT to within a goal at 4-3 with his unassisted goal with 18 seconds to play in the quarter.

The Red Dragons scored the only goal of the second quarter. Mike Abbott (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) scored an unassisted goal with 5:03 to play in the half, giving Cortland a 5-3 lead at the break.

Cortland State opened up their lead in the third quarter, scoring four straight goals to open the quarter. Kyle Lambert (Brentwood, NY/Brentood) opened the scoring in the third on an assist from Ryan Simensky (Locust Valley, NY/LocustValley). Adam Hyde tallied a pair, followed by a man-up goal by Brian Atkins, making it 9-3.

David Thering (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY/Fairport) broke the string with his unassisted goal with 5:46 to play in the third. He drove around the cage and beat Cortland goalie Ben Gaebel (Deferiet, NY/Carthage) for his first goal of the afternoon.

Adam Hughes made it 10-4 Cortland State with the assist going to Kyle Lambert.

The Tigers made a nice run in the fourth quarter to get within two goals.

Freshman Andrew Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) (Corning, NY/Corning East) took a pass from Thering with 11:27 to play, making it 10-5. Thering scored his second goal of the game with 8:28 to play, cutting the Red Dragons lead to 10-6.

After another Adam Hyde goal made it 11-6 Thering, Ruocco and Jesien scored consecutive goals, cutting Cortland's lead to 11-9.

Mike Abbott put the game away with 52 seconds to play on an asist from Adam Hughes.

Cortland outshot RIT 45-28 on the afternoon. Each team was excellent on the clears as RIT cleared the ball 15-of-17 times and Cortland cleard the ball 16-of-17 times.

Thering led RIT with three goals and an assist. Jesien added three goals and Andrew Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) added two goals and an assist.

Brad Conlon (Ottawa, Ontario/Bridgeton Academy) (Ottawa, Ontario/Bridgeton Academy) made 15 saves in net for RIT who play Elmira College on Wednesday, March 30 at 4 p.m.
