Click For BoxscoreROCHESTER, NY -- For the second straight game the RIT men's lacrosse lost in overtime. This time it was to Union College, 12-11 at RIT's Turf Field.
David Thering (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY) gave RIT a 1-0 lead at the 10:41 mark of the first quarter on an unassisted tally. After a goal by Bill Condon tied the score at 1-1 freshman
Andrew Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) (Corning, NY) scored on an assist from
Zach Bednarz (Webster, NY/Webster) (Webster, NY) giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Bryan Benjy and Dan Myerow each scored for the Dutchmen giving them a 3-2 lead.
Ruocco struck again at 4:51 of the first on assists from Thering and Bednarz, tying the score at 3-3.
After a pair of Union goals gave the Dutchmen a two-goal cushion Ruocco scored his third goal of the quarter with 1:06 to play that pulled RIT to within one goal at 5-4.
Union opened the second quarter with three straight goals, two by Myerow and one by Pete Gross, giving them an 8-4 lead.
Zach Bednarz (Webster, NY/Webster) scored at 12:04 of the second on an assist from Ruocco, pulling the Tigers to within three goals at 8-5.
The Tigers closed out the second with a pair of goals, one on the extra man from
David Thering (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and the other by
Joe Argese (Jordan, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) (Jordan, NY), making it 9-8 Union.
RIT scored twice in the third quarter. The first was an unassisted goal by Bednarz with 11:06 to play. Thering scored at 1:26 on an assist from Bednarz that tied the score at 9-9.
The Tigers gave up a goal to Union with five seconds to play in the third, giving the Dutchmen the lead back at 10-9.
Bill Condon made it 11-9 with his goal at 9:16 of the fourth on an assist from Mike Sparico.
Bednarz pulled RIT to within a goal at 11-10 with his third goal of the day on an assist from
Colin Jesien (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-S. Dorchester) (Cambridge, MD) with 4:24 to play in the fourth.
Then, with 1:26 to play Thering drove the cage and forced himself into scoring position, beating Union's goalie, tying the score at 11-11.
RIT killed off a one-minute penalty in overtime and cleared the ball. Thering had a decent shot blocked in the overtime, leading to a clearing situation for Union.
The Dutchmen cleared the ball and got it to Pete Gross who drove to the cage and beat RIT goalie
John Foley (Guelph, Ontario/Our Lady of Lourdes) for the game-winning tally.
RIT out shot Union 64-27 and had 49 ground balls to Union's 25. The Tigers won 17-of-26 face-offs and cleared the ball 19-of-22 times.
RIT went 2-for-10 on man-up tries, while Union went 2-for-6.
Zach Bednarz (Webster, NY/Webster) led RIT with eight points on three goals and five assists.
David Thering (Fairport, NY/Fairport) added six points on four goals and two assists, while
Andrew Ruocco (Corning, NY/Corning East) added three goals and an assist.
Jacob Cannan (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) (Itondequoit, NY) had 11 ground balls and won 17 face-offs.
John Foley (Guelph, Ontario/Our Lady of Lourdes) (Guelph, Ontario) made 11 saves in net for RIT, allowing 12 goals.
The Tigers face Oneonta State on Saturday, March 19 at 12 p.m. in Oneonta, New York.
