ROCHESTER -- In a battle for first place in the Empire 8 the RIT (12-7, 6-2 Empire 8) men's basketball team fell to #7 St. John Fisher College (19-0, 8-0 Empire 8), 87-76 on Friday night at Clark Gymnasium.
RIT forward Sean Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) led all scorers with 28 points and became the 18th player in RIT history to reach 1,000 career points. He now has 1,024 career points, placing him 18th on RIT's all-time scoring list.
RIT hung close in the beginning of the first half but the Cardinals ended the half on a 16-6 run, taking a 46-30 lead into the lockerroom.
Twice RIT was on the verge of regaining the momentum. The first came when Fran Snyder (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude) (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude) came down on a break and attempted an alley-oop pass to Kyle Goff (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson) (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson). St. John Fisher's Dan McSweeney blocked Goff's Dunk that started the break, leading to a Fisher bucket.
The second time came when McSweeney blocked Jesse Foote (Lockwood, NY/Spencer-Van Ettan)'s (Lockwood, NY/Spencer-Van Ettan) layup attempt underneath the basket that also led to points for the Cardinals.
RIT shot 32.3% (10-for-31) in the first half and made 7-of-10 free throws. Murphy led RIT with 11 points and Tim Bacon (Massena, NY/Massena) added seven points. RIT was outrebounded by St. John Fisher 30-20 in the first half, including 13 offensive boards.
The Tigers scored seven straight points on layups by Foote and Snyder and got to within 60-50 on a three-pointer by Murphy with 12:39 to play in the second half.
But the Cardinals forged ahead and built teir lead back to 19 points. RIT got to within 11 points twice late in the game but ran out of time as Fisher went on to the 87-76 win.
Besides Murphy's 28 points Reggie Shore (Amityville, NY/Amityville) (Amityville, NY/Amityville) scored a season-high 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting. He also had two assists and three steals.
Jesse Foote (Lockwood, NY/Spencer-Van Ettan) also had a season-high 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Kyle Goff (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson) scored nine of his 10 points in the second and had 10 rebounds.
RIT will face Alfred University in Empire 8 action on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
