MILFORD, CT -- The RIT men's hockey team allowed five power play goals, losing to Sacred Heart University, 8-5 on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops RIT to 4-8-1 on the season, while Sacred Heart improves to 6-3-1 overall.
Sacred Heart University got on the scoreboard first at 5:32 of the first period. With the Pioneers on the power play Bernie Chmiel took a shot from the point that Pierre-Luc O'Brien deflected past RIT goaltender
Jocelyn Guimond (St.-Edouard-de-Lotbiniere, PQ/Williams Lake) (Quebec City, PQ).
The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead at 8:29 of the first on a goal from Bear Trapp. Trapp deflected in a shot from O'Brien who ripped a shot from the point.
RIT cut Sacred Heart's lead in half at 9:16 of the first on a goal by
Rob Tarantino (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) (Oakville, ON). Tarantino took a pass from
Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) (Toronto, ON) down low and wristed a hot past Pioneer's netminder Stefan Drew, making it 2-1.
Both teams picked up the scoring in the second period as they combined for five goals. Sacred Heart took a 3-1 lead at 6:54 on a power play goal by Rocco Molinaro.
The Pioneers made it 4-1 at 10:15 of the second on a power play goal by Alexendre Parent. Pierre-Luc O'Brien had the assist on the play.
The Tigers broke through at 14:17 of the second on a goal by
Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen).
Rob Tarantino (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades) fed Smith from behind the net as he was streaking down the slot. Smith's one-timed his shot past Drew, making it 4-2.
Ten seconds after Sacred Heart made it 5-2
Darrell Draper (Tigard, OR/Cowichon Capitals) (Tigard, OR) made it 5-3 with his first goal of the game.
Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) (Ste.-Therese, PQ) and Draper broke into the Pioneers zone 2-on-1. Lambert fed Draper who beat Drew with a one-timer.
RIT came out and cut Sacred Heart's lead to one goal less than two minutes into the third period.
Steve Pinizzotto (Mississauga, ON/Oakville Blades) (Mississauga, ON) tallied his first collegiate goal on assists from
Bobby Raymond (Lucknow, ON/Owen Sound Greys) (Lucnow, ON) and
Rob Tarantino (Oakville, ON/Oakville Blades), making it 5-4.
Sacred Heart made it 6-4 at the three minute mark on a power play goal by Bernie Chmiel.
RIT made it 6-5 at 8:47 of the third on a goal by
Darren Doherty (Douro, ON/Cobourg Cougars) (Douro, ON). Doherty took a pass from
Brennan Sarazin (Nepean, ON/Nepean) (Nepeam, ON) and broke in on Drew. He wristed a shot that Drew got a body on, but couldn't stop as it trickled over his shoulder and into the net.
Sacred Heart took a two-goal lead at 9:54 on another power play goal. This time Alexandre Parent lit the lamp with the assists going to Bear Trapp and Rocco Molinaro.
The Pioneers put the game away with 35 seconds to play on an empy net goal by O'brien, making it 8-5.
RIT was 0-for-5 on the power play, while allowing five power play goals in nine chances. The Tigers were out shot 40-33 as
Jocelyn Guimond (St.-Edouard-de-Lotbiniere, PQ/Williams Lake) made 33 saves in net for RIT, allowing seven goals. The most he's allowed this season.
RIT will host Union College on Friday December 2 at 7 p.m. in Frank Ritter Arena.
