ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's tennis team competed in the Empire 8 Tournament today. The women's tennis team played Alfred University in the first round of the tournament and lost to the Saxons by a score of 5-4. In the second round the Tigers defeated Elmira 5-1.
In the first round of play, seniors Aimee Holmberg (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug) and Michelle Nicholson (Grove City, PA/Grove City) (Grove City, Pa/Grove City) won at third doubles 8-6.
In singles, sophomore, Leigh Bryson (Wallingford, CT/Mark T. Sheehan) (Wallingford, CT/Mark T. Sheehan), senior, Rachel Pikus (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary), and Holmberg all won their matches against Alfred.
For the second round the Tigers only played singles. Wins came from freshman, Brianne Francisco (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam), senior, Lindsey Brady (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) (Emmaus, Pa/Emmaus), Bryson, Pikus, and Nicholson.
The Tigers play for fifth place Sunday morning at Tennis Heaven in Pittsford. The match begins at 8 am.
