ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's ice hockey team could not repeat the magic from Friday, losing to #18 St. Lawrence University, 6-3 on Saturday. The loss drops RIT to 3-3-0 overall, while St. Lawrence improves to 4-2-0 on the season.
Despite the loss on Saturday Head Coach Wayne Wilson was pleased with the Tigers performance this weekend.
“Overall this was a great stepping stone for our team,” stated Wilson. “Being able to get a win over one of the better teams in Division I.”
St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead on a two-man power play tally at 4:49 of the first period. Kevin DeVergilio took a pass from Max Taylor and roofed a shot over Jocelyn Guimond (St.-Edouard-de-Lotbiniere, PQ/Williams Lake)'s (St. Edouard-de-Lotbiniere, PQ) shoulder.
The Saints made it 2-0 at 10:31 of the first on a goal by John Zeiler. T.J. Trevelyan and Zeiler broke in 2-on-1. Trevelyan passed it to Zeiler who beat Guimond cleanly.
RIT got to within a goal at 11:20 of the first on a power play goal by Marc Hyman (Thornhill, ON/Thornhill Rattlers) (Thornhill, ON). Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) (Ste.-Therese, PQ) fed Hyman at the point, and he ripped a shot that sailed over Justin Pesony's shoulder, cutting St. Lawrence's lead to 2-1.
Just before the end of the period St. Lawrence got a short-handed goal from Adam Hogg at 18:14, making 3-1 Saints at the first intermission.
RIT cut the Saints lead to 3-2 at 4:33 of the second on a goal by Darrel Draper (Tigard, OR). Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) took a shot that Pesony saved. The rebound came right to Draper at the side of the net. He was in the right place at the right time and jammed home the rebound into the open net for his first goal of the season.
Brennan Sarazin (Nepean, ON/Nepean) (Nepean, ON) tied the game at 3-3 with an even strength goal at 5:58. The Saints turned the puck over in their own zone. Sarazin, gathered in the loose puck, wristing a shot past Pesony.
From that point on the Saints controlled the period, tallying two goals. Mike Zbriger made it 4-3 at 10:59 of the second on assists from Jared Ross and Max Taylor. Kevin DeVergilio gave the Saints a 5-3 lead at 17:42 on an assist from Zach Miskovic.
The Saints kept the pressure on in the third period, but Guimond was up to the task, making some big saves. St. Lawrence finally broke through at 12:41 of the third on a goal by Jamie Parker. Adam Hogg took a shot that Guimond saved, however the rebound came to Parker and he put home the rebound into an open net.
RIT was out shot by St. Lawrence, 43-22 and went 1-for-8 on the power play. The Saints went 1-for-7 on the power play.
RIT will host Alabama-Huntsville on Friday and Saturday, November 7 and 8 at the Frank Ritter Arena.
