ROCHESTER, NY --
On the strength of a NCAA record tying 66 saves from sophomore goalie Jocelyn Guimond (St.-Edouard-de-Lotbiniere, PQ/Williams Lake) (St.-Edouard-de-Lotbiniere), the RIT men's hockey team upset #18 St. Lawrence University, 3-2 on Friday evening from a raucous Ritter Arena.

"It was a great team effort," said Head Coach Wayne Wilson. "We came up with some big power play goals and Jocelyn came up big when we needed him."

Guimond tied the Division I record for most saves in a three period game by a winning goaltender. It was done twice before, by Ed Hornstein of Providence in a 4-3 win over Clarkson on Feb. 26, 1955 and by Don Cutts of RPI made 66 saves in an 8-2 win over Boston University on Dec. 29, 1973.

The Saints (3-2-0) took a 1-0 lead at 13:03 of the first period with a 5-on-3 power play goal by John Zeiler. Mike Zbriger fed Zeiler who beat Guimond cleanly.

RIT (3-2-0) came back to tie the score at 1 on a power play goal by Simon Lambert (Ste.-Therese, PQ/Cumberland Grads) (Ste.-Therese, PQ) at 15:54 of the first. Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) (Toronto, ON) took a shot from the slot that ricocheted off the post and onto Lambert's stick. He poked home a shot past Justin Pesony for his fourth goal of the season.

Guimond was fabulous in the first period, turning away shots from all angles. He faced 24 shots in the first period, making 23 stops.

St. Lawrence took a 2-1 lead at 8:14 of the second period on another power play goal. This time Zbriger scored on an assist from Zeiler.

Darren Doherty (Douro, ON/Cobourg Cougars) (Douro, ON) tied the score at 11:39 of the second on assists from Matt Smith (Toronto, ON/Kitchener Dutchmen) and Lambert. Lambert came down and put a shot on net, the rebound came to Smith who found Doherty in the slot. Doherty roofed a shot over Pesony for RIT's second power play goal of the night.

The Tigers took the lead at 16:04 of the second on Darren Olson (Abbotsford, BC/Coquitlam)'s (Abbotsford, BC) first collegiate goal. Olson took a pass from Matt Harris (Toronto, ON/Ajax Axemen) (Toronto, ON) and put forth an amazing individual effort beating his defender, giving RIT a 3-2 lead.

RIT's Brad Harris (Winnipeg, MB/Leamington Flyers) (Winnipeg, MB) took a major penalty late in the second period, giving St. Lawrence a five minute power play to open the third period.

The Saints came out firing in the first five minutes of the third period but Guimond was equal to the task, making save after save. He seemed to anticipate where the shots were going to come from and was able to get a shoulder, or a toe on the puck. He would sprawl out and at the last second turn the shot aside.

"The coaches said I would be facing a lot of shots," said an exhausted Guimond. "It was like I was back in juniors when I would face a lot of shots. It was a very big win for our team." In all, Guimond turned away all 29 shots he faced in the third period, earning the game's first star. Guimond's 66 saves against the Saints was the second most saves in a game by a Tiger netminder and the most since Marty Reasoner made 75 saves back in the mid 1970's.

The same two teams will face each other on Saturday night at the Ritter Arena. Face-off is at 7 p.m.
