ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT Women's Soccer team (3-9-1, 1-3-1 Empire 8) fell to nationally-ranked William Smith College by a score of 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the RIT Field.
William Smith (10-0-1, 4-0-1 Liberty League) out-shot RIT 13-0 in the first half, but the Tigers weathered the flurry and the two teams went into halftime locked in a scoreless tie.
RIT generated its best scoring opportunity of the day in the 62nd minute, as Gabrielle Peters (Marion, NY/Marion) (Marion, NY/Marion) feathered a pass into the box for a streaking Emily Traversi (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough). Traversi took the pass in stride and made a great move on the defender, but her shot from about five yards out was smothered by Herons goalie Nikki Dudley, who made a fine diving stop.
The Herons jumped on the board soon after, as Laura Burnett-Kurie took a feed from Kate Warner inside the penalty area, turned around and ripped a shot the hooked just inside the left goal post in the 67th minute to give William Smith the lead.
Burnett-Kurie struck again in the 82nd minute, as a pass from Alexandra Rieben sprung the Herons leading scorer on a breakaway and Burnett-Kurie made no mistake, putting the shot in nearly the same spot as her first goal to give the Herons a 2-0 lead. The goal was Burnett-Kurie's 12th of the season.
Ashley Conti (Canfield, OH/Canfield) was stellar in the net for RIT, stopping 10 shots. Dudley earned her 10th shutout of the season for William Smith.
The Herons out-shot RIT 23-2. William Smith has now allowed just one goal in 11 games this season.
RIT is back in action on Tuesday, October 18, as they host Empire 8 foe Alfred University at 4 p.m.
