ROCHESTER, NY - Tournament Most Valuable Player Tara Schmitt scored 1:12 into overtime to give the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point a 2-1 win over RIT in the championship game of the Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament today at RIT Field.
Schmitt took the ball at midfield and cut through the RIT defense, whistling a shot off the left goal post and into the net. RIT opened the scoring in the 28th minute, as Mallory Frost (Barre, VT/Spaulding) (Barre, VT) chipped in a shot from about 15 yards out. The Tigers led 1-0 going into halftime.
RIT nearly took a 2-0 lead just minutes into the second half. Anna Kolnik (Sharon, WI/Big Foot) (Sharon, WI) won a battle inside the penalty area, eluded the goalkeeper and launched a shot at the gaping Pointers net. Unfortnately for the Tigers, Schmitt raced back and swept the ball away just before it passed the goal line, keeping the score 1-0.
The Pointers tied the game in the 53rd minute, as Melissa Becker converted on a penalty kick, after a Pointer player was knocked down in the penalty area. Wisconsin Stevens-Point out-shot the Tigers 14-7.
