Baseball Swept by St. Lawrence

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT baseball team was swept by St. Lawrence University this afternoon at RIT Field. RIT lostgame #1 12-2 and were defeated in game #2 5-2.

In game #1 RIT took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but yielded three runs in the third, one in the fourth and fifth. The Saints broke the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs. RIT starter Dan Weglinski (Hyde Park, NY/F D Roosevelt) (Hyde Park, NY) started the game and allowed four runs in four innings of work. Ian Ammons (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY) came in in the fifth and allowed eight runs, five of which were earned. Jeff Webb (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) (McMurray, PA) pitched the final 2/3 of an inning with one strike out.

Mark Sapienza (Avon, NY/Avon Central) (Avon, NY) went 2-3 as St. Lawrence starter Nick Laettner held the Tigers to just five hits. Jamie Schild (Fairport, NY/Fairport) (Fairport, NY), John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) (East Ware, NY), Jeff Ware (Orchard Park, NY/St. Francis) (Orchard Park, NY) and Brian Lindenau (Tucson, AZ/Sabino) (Tucson, AZ) each had a hit.

In game #2 the Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead until the third when John Byrne (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) belted a home run over the right field fence, cutting St. Lawrence's lead to 4-2. RIT's bats were shut down the rest of the way as Pete Rahmer held the Tigers to three hits. Nick Bell (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown High School) (Jamestown, NY) took the loss for RIT, allowing five runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked just one batter.

RIT will host Clarkson University on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
