Softball Splits With Elmira

ELMIRA, NY -- The RIT (4-8, 1-1 E8) softball team split a pair of games against Empire 8 foe Elmira College (1-3, 1-3 E8) on Saturday afternoon. Elmira took game #1, 6-5, while RIT won game #2, 7-3.

Elmira scored a run in the second and sixth innings to hold a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh. The Tigers scored two runs in the seventh, tying the score at 2-2. RIT took a 5-2 lead with three runs in the top of the eighth, but Elmira answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the game 6-5.

Elaine Vonderembse (Oak Harbor, OH/Genoa Area) (Genoa, OH) led RIT with three hits in four at bats and scored a run. Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) (Rome, NY) and Danielle Miller (Merrimack, NH) each went 2-4. Miller drove in three runs with a double and a home run. Tonya Campbell (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) (Rochester, NY) went 1-4 with a double and an RBI.

Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) went the disance on the mound for RIT allowing six runs on six hits. She struck out 10 and walked one, taking the loss.

In game #2 RIT took a 2-0 early lead, scoring a run in the first and third innings. Elmira took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. The Tigers answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the sixth to take the game 7-3.

Tonya Campbell (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) led RIT going 3-3. She had a double, scored a run and drove in four. Elaine Vonderembse (Oak Harbor, OH/Genoa Area), Kelly Iagulli (Eagle River, AK/Chugiak) (Eagle River, AK) and Danielle Miller each had two hits. Megan Varner (Apalachin, NY) went 1-4 and drove in two runs.

Mary Keegan (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) (West Seneca, NY) continued to have a strong freshman campaign. She picked up her thrird win of the season versus Elmira. She went seven innings, allowing three unearned runs on six hits. She had 14 strike outs and walked three.
