Men's Basketball Loses to Oswego in Joe King Tournament Championship Game

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (2-3) men's basketball team were defeated by Oswego State (8-0), 68-64 in the championship game of the Joe King Tournament hosted by Nazareth College. RIT's Kyle Goff (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson) (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson) and Sean Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) were named to the All-Tournament team.

RIT led throughout much of the first half building a 10-point lead with 8:45 to play on a free throw by Barrett Zeinfeld (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills).

Oswego State closed out the first half with a 24-10 run and led 37-33 at the break. Erik Roberson nailed a trio of thee-pointers in that stretch for the Lakers.

Sean Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) led RIT with 12 points in the first half including three three-pointers. Jesse Foote (Lockwood, NY/Spencer-Van Ettan) (Lockwood, NY/Spencer-Van Ettan) tallied eight points, scoring RIT's first eight points of the game.

Oswego State built their lead to eight point midway through the second half. Jake Constance's bucket with 10:43 to play gave the Lakers a 52-44 lead.

RIT answered with an 18-9 run and took the lead on layup by Fran Snyder (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude) (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon St. Jude). He drove into the lane and threw up a shot that dropped in as he was fouled. He converted the free throw giving the Tigers a 63-61 lead.

Oswego State answered back on a three-pointer by Nick Perioli giving the Lakers the lead back at 64-63.

With 1:10 to play in regulation Murphy was fouled by Nat Burridge sending him to the line for two shots. Murphy converted the first tying the game at 64-64. His second shot missed giving Oswego the ball back.

After a free throw by Dave Ponza gave Oswego a 65-64 lead, RIT had a chance to take the lead back. Snyder drove the ball into the lane and had a good look at the basket. His layup just missed going in and Oswego grabbed the rebound.

The Tigers tried fouling to conserve time but the Lakers made their free throws down the stretch to preserve the 68-64 wn.

Sean Murphy (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) led RIT with 16 points and five rebounds. Tim Bacon (Massena, NY/Massena) (Massena, NY/Massena) added 10 points while Kyle Goff (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson) added eight points an seven rebounds.

RIT will host Clarkson University on Tuesday, December 14 at 8 p.m.
