PITTSFORD, NY - The RIT Women's Volleyball team played perhaps its complete match of the year to date, upending cross-town rival St. john Fisher in three games. Scores of the match were 30-26, 30-18, 30-21.
With the visiting Tianjin University of Technology, a team from China who RIT visited in late August in town, the Tigers played great defensively, and received strong play on the offensive end.
Senior Sarah Ballard (Lake View, NY/Frontier) (Lake View, NY/Frontier) dished out 48 assists and recorded 18 digs. Junior Libero Laura Grell (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) led the way defensively with 26 digs. Christina Anabel (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) hit .345 on the evening, recording 17 kills and 15 digs.
The Tigers trailed 26-24 in the first game, before rattling off a 6-0 run to win game one 30-26. In game two, RIT led 9-6, before scoring 11 straight points to go up 20-6 and putting game two out of reach.
Junior Laurie Underhill (East Aurora, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy) (East Aurora, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy) finished with 23 digs and 13 kills, while classmate Bonnie Harriman (Danbury, CT/Danbury) (Danbury, CT/Danbury) chipped in with 11 kills. Sophomore Dani Fisher (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) led RIT with four blocks.
St. john Fisher (12-11, 0-1 Empire 8) was led by Hannah Cordes (Manlius, NY) with 19 assists and Colleen Kiser, (Hamburg, NY) who recorded 32 digs and nine kills.
RIT (9-7, 2-0 Empire 8) hosts Tianjin University of Technology (TUT) in a special exhibition match at the Clark Gym on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. TUT also plays Nazareth at the Clark Gym at 5 p.m.
TUT is one of the top-ranked college teams in China. The team will be traveling to New York City this weekend with RIT. The Tigers play in the NYU Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
