Women's Volleyball Finishes in Third Place at the NYSWCAA Tournament; Anabel and Ballard Named to the All-Tournament Team

CORTLAND, NY -
The RIT Women's Volleyball Team finished 1-1 on the second day of the NYSWCAA Tournament to finish in third place.  In addition, senior setter Sarah Ballard (Lake View, NY/Frontier) (Lake View, NY/Frontier) and junior outside hitter Christina Anabel (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) were named to the NYSWCAA All-Tournament Team.

The Tigers opened the day versus top-ranked NYU, also the #1 team in all of Division III.  RIT put forth a valiant effort, but fell to the Violets 15-30, 30-28, 18-30, 17-30. 

Ballard dished out 32 assists to go along with 14 digs.  Anabel recorded 13 digs and 12 kills, while classmate Bonnie Harriman (Danbury, CT/Danbury) (Danbury, CT/Danbury) finished with 13 digs and 11 kills.  Sophomore Michelle Skowzgird (Grayslake, IL/John Hersey) (Grayslake, IL/John Hersey) led the team with three blocks.

In the third place game, the Tigers held off Empire 8 rival and #3 seeded Ithaca College in five games.  Scores of the match were 17-30, 30-26, 30-19, 29-31, 15-13. 

Ballard led the Tigers with 51 assists and 28 digs.  Both Anabel and Harriman recorded 21 kills apiece, while first-year middle hitter Shea Haney (Newark, DE/St. Elizabeth) (Newark, DE/St. Elizabeth) led the squad with six blocks.

Yesterday, the #5 Tigers defeated #12 SUNY Oneonta, and fourth-seeded Skidmore in three games apiece.

RIT (23-11, 6-1 Empire 8) returns to action on Tuesday night, as they host SUNY Brockport in the Tigers final regular season home match at the Clark Gym.  Game time is at 7 p.m.
