ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT Men's Soccer team had its two game unbeaten streak halted on Saturday as Alfred University upended the Tigers by a score of 2-1.
The Saxons (7-3-1, 2-1-0 Empire 8) jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead on the strength of goals by Keith Phelan and Bobby Linaberry. The goal for Linaberry was his conference-leading ninth of the year.
RIT came out strong in the second half, peppering the Alfred net. The Tigers thought they had a goal in the 55th minute, but a header attempt by Gavin Thomas (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) (Ontario, NY/Wayne) that found the back of the net was ruled a handball by the referee.
The Tigers did cut the lead in half less than a minute later however, when junior midfielder Jorge Cirulizza (McLean, VA/Gonzaga) ripped in a shot on the rush from about 20 yards out off a feed from Thomas.
RIT had a few more chances to tie the game, including a shot inside the box by Joe Sheflin (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) that was whistled just wide with about 10 minutes remaining.
The Tigers out-shot Alfred 16-6 in the game. Saxons goalkeeper Brian Middleton finished with three saves, while RIT's Nate Andrews (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) recorded two saves.
RIT (5-3-1, 1-1-0 Empire 8) returns to action on Tuesday, as the play host to the University of Rochester at 4 p.m.
