ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT men's soccer team broke a four-game winless streak in a big way, scoring five first half goals en route to a 5-0 win over Empire 8 rival Elmira at RIT Field on Friday afternoon.
Junior Brian Aderer (Acton, MA/Acton Boxborough) (Acton, MA/Acton Boxborough) led the way offensively, scoring his first two goals of the year to go along with an assist. The win gives the Tigers sole possession of fourth place in the Empire 8 conference, as the move three points ahead of Elmira and Nazareth. The top four finishers earn a berth in the Empire 8 post-season touranment, held in the first week of November.
Playing through a steady downpour, the Tigers struck first just 2:50 into the game, when Gavin Thomas (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) (Ontario, NY/Wayne) received a cross from Mike Lawson (Wall, NJ/Wall) and slammed the ball into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
In the 10th minute, senior Joe Sheflin (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo) was left all alone in front of the Elmira net and put a shot into a wide open net to make it 2-0. Assisting on the goal was Abe Zwirn (Berwick, ME/Noble) (Berwick, ME/Noble) and Mark Frisicano (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) (Rochester,NY/Greece Olympia).
Aderer scored two goals in a row less than six minutes apart to make it 4-0 RIT. First-year midfielder Phil Galluzzo (Northfield, MA/Northfield-Mt. Hermon) (Northfied, MA/Northfield-Mt. Hermon) scored his first collegiate goal in the 44th minute to close out the scoring. He took a pass from Aderer and put a shot just inide the left post.
RIT out-shot the Soaring Eagles 25-2. Goalkeeper Kelly Brooks (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony) finished with seven saves for Elmira (2-8-0, 1-3-0 Empire 8).
The Tigers (6-5-1, 2-2-0 Empire 8) return to action on Wednesday, October 20th, as they travel to cross-town rival St. John Fisher to play the Cardinals at 7 p.m.
