RIT Falls to Defending National Champion Ithaca in E8 Softball Championship Game

| 5/3/2003 4:33:16 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The defending NCAA Division III National Champion Ithaca College softball team showed why it captured the crown last season with a 9-0 victory against Rochester Institute of Technology in the Empire 8 Championship game Saturday afternoon.

Ithaca which soundly swept RIT in the regular season doubleheader 7-1 and 6-2, picked up where it left off with a run in the top of the third inning and three in the fourth and then piled on five runs in the top of the sixth to win via the eight-run rule.

Ithaca certainly has the number of 2002 Empire 8 Player of the Year Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) as she was touched for all nine runs (six earned) on 13 hits (including five extra-base hits). In the two earier meetings against Ithaca this year, McNamara allowed all seven earned runs on 10 hits including three home runs in a 7-1 loss and then allowed all six earned runs on five hits in a 6-2 defeat.

RIT will look for a bid to the ECAC tournament on Monday.
