ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nick Mayer scored six goals and added two assists to lead the No. 9 Ithaca College men's lacrosse team to a 15-5 victory at Rochester Institute of Technology and kept its hopes alive for claiming an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament.
Ithaca (11-3 overall, 6-1 in Empire 8) jumped out to an early lead 4-0 lead with 7:23 remaining in the first quarter. Mayer scored two of the Bomber goals, while Brian Weil scored one goal and setup the other three.
However after a fast Ithaca start, RIT's defense buckled down and cut the lead in half 4-2 with 10:32 to go in the second quarter on David Thering (Fairport, NY/Fairport H.S.)'s goal. RIT senior Andrew Pratt (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit H.S.), playing in his final home game at RIT Field, scored the Tigers first goal of the game.
Ithaca took a 5-3 lead into halftime, but RIT's Chris Copeland (Webster, NY/Webster) opened up the second half scoring with a man-up goal from Pratt to cut the lead to 5-4 with 12:17 to go in the third quarter. However, Ithaca figured out what was neutralizing its offense and rifled off eight unanswered goals and when the smoke cleared the Bombers were comfortably ahead 13-4 with 10:51 to go in the fourth quarter.
Mayer scored four of Ithaca's goals in the 8-0 run, while Dennis Juleff added a pair and Matt Casey assisted on five of the goals. Casey finished with six assists on the afternoon and Juleff posted the hat-trick.
Ithaca's hopes for an NCAA bid rest on the NCAA selection committee which decides the Bombers fate on Sunday, May 4, while RIT's hopes for an ECAC Upstate Tournament bid will be determined Monday, May 5.
