ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Rochester Institute of Technology advanced to Saturday play in the Empire 8 Final Four softball tournament with a 4-2 victory against Elmira Friday afternoon from Kostrinsky Field.
McNamara struck out two of three in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win. RIT will face the loser of the No. 1-seed Ithaca vs. No. 2-seed St. John Fisher game which leads off action Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Tigers fell in the first game of the double-elmination tournament to No. 2-seed St. John Fisher 3-0. Shari McNamara (Rome, NY/Rome Catholic) gave up more than one earned run for just the third time this season in 23 appearances. The other two times were against the top-seed of the tournament and host Ithaca College which is ranked No. 18 in the nation.
McNamara improved to 17-5 on the season with a complete-game three hitter against Elmira allowing two runs (unearned), a walk and struck out four batters.
Danielle Miller, who went 4-for-6 on the afternoon, was 2-for-3 in the Tigers victory against the Soaring Eagles witha run scored, while McNamara and Jennifer Miazga (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) collected two hits apiece.
RIT trailed 2-0 after two innings, when the Soaring Eagles scored single unearned-runs in the bottom of each inning. The Tigers battled back with a run via Elmira blunders in the top of the third inning after Kelly Iagulli (Eagle River, AK/Chugiak) reach on an error by the first baseman. Miller followed with a single to third, then Caitlin Krumm (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville North) reached on an by the left fielder and Iagulli scored.
The Tigers added a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game when Miller led off the inning with a single, then after a strikeout by Krumm, McNamara singled advancing Miller to third. Miazga singled to right field scoring Miller from second.
RIT added two runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory. Vonderembse singled to center field to lead off the inning, then advanced to second on Ashley Kennedy's sacrifice bunt and advanced to third via smart base-running catching a napping Elmira defense. Miller walked to put runners on first and second, then Krumm delivered an RBI single down the left field line plating Iagulli to end the scoring.
