CANTON, N.Y. -- The Rochester Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a 5-1 first-quarter deficit as SUNY Geneseo recorded a 12-9 victory to elminate the Tigers from the ECAC Upstate Tournament.
Geneseo, which lost to RIT 8-7 at Liverpool High School on March 18, scored just 50 seconds into the game on Chris Stock's unassisted marker, then Jack Ryerson followed just 16 seconds later. The Knights scored the next three goals in a 50-second span with Dave Spennacchio's goal at 8:07, then David Hilfinger at the 7:25 mark and then Chris Kelley's goal closed out the 5-0 run at 7:17.
RIT's David Thering (Fairport, NY/Fairport H.S.), the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, scord his 29th goal of the season to prevent the Tigers from going scoreless in the first quarter. Thering finished with four goals to finish the season with 32 goals and 26 assists for 58 points.
Chris Copeland (Webster, NY/Webster) scored one of his three goals on the afternoon to cut the lead to 5-2 with 10:59 to go in the second quarter. RIT never closed the deficit to less than three goals until Therings fourth of the game cut the lead to 11-9 with 5:01 remaining.
Geneseo's Tim Killoran rebuilt a three-goal cushion 12-9 with 2:51 remaining to close out the scoring.
Dave Spennacchio led a balanced attack for Geneseo with three goals and an assist. David Hilfinger added two goals, and Chris Stock and Chris Kelley each scored a goal and added two assists. Nine players scored goals for Geneseo, and 11 players recorded a point.
Andy Howk made 13 saves for Geneseo, now 12-3 on the season, while Jon Sinclair (Herndon, VA/Herndon H.S.) made 10 saves for the Tigers, who finish the year 7-8.
